Fauves in the Streets Inspired by Howard Arkley and the Fauvists Painters, students of Riot of Colour studied colour mixing and scientific colour theory while exploring different styles of painting. The process of experimenting, developing and refining techniques included watercolour painting, colour mixing, stencilling and drawing with different technical studies. - Hilary Breman

Still Life Paintings Students in Riot of Colour experimented with optical colour mixing using a variety of Modernist painting techniques. They observed real still life compositions as part of their studio practice. Interchanging colour palettes for different tones allowed the students to create the illusion of depth and separate forms. - Hilary Breman

BEAUTY & THE BEAST
Fabric Design for Boxer Shorts Due to the purchase of a Dye Sublimation printer, St Columba's College students now have the opportunity to design and create their own fabric. The Year 9 Beauty and the Beast textile students created a design they wished to have printed onto fabric to make into Boxer Shorts. Unfortunately due to Victorian lockdowns, students were unable to complete the boxer shorts, but their images were printed onto white satin as "swatches" for their journal.

REALITY CHECK
Modernist Elements Students as photographers used the camera as a direct tool rather than manipulating images to conform to traditional notions of artistic beauty. They went around the school yard to photograph both geometric and organic form and design. They adjusted their images into black and white to reduce the element into its simplest form. See if you can guess what art element they chose to convey and where it is in the school yard? Example: Line at the school canteen, shapes in the ground near the learning area, texture in the plant or garden.

Photograms and 35mm Portraits For this task, Students in Reality Check made silver gelatin prints in the darkroom. Students used enlargers to project their portraits from the 35mm negative onto photo paper, on which they had applied the pressed flora to partially block the image. They experimented with different chemistry applications, such as using a brush and spray bottle to selectively develop the image. - Hilary Breman

Me, Myself & I The self-portrait, a genre inherited from painting, has become a staple form of photographic image-making. Students questioned the philosophical meaning and the role of the selfie in modern life and what it is to capture a memory in time or to set up life to produce a photo. In this assignment, students decide how they might take a shadow selfie, a reflected selfie, an obscured selfie amongst various styles of self-portraits. - Hilary Breman

WHAT'S THE STORY?
Short Films In "What’s the Story", students investigated the conventions of narratives and how they are constructed. They explored the relationship between codes and conventions, completed appropriate pre-production documentation and learnt how to use a DSLR camera through a series of video exercises and the production of narratives. They analysed various existing media products to better understand the production of films. They worked in small groups to interpret a simple script and each student independently edited their own interpretation of the shared footage. The following experimental films were made with the following genres in mind: Thriller, Horror, and Fantasy.
