Emma Malkoun 10CNMS3Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci
1503 Dear Diary, A little while before starting the painting I got a letter from Francesco del Giocondo, who asked me to paint the portrait of his wife Lisa. We started the painting process straight away in Florence. Lisa walked in and was very beautiful and poised. Lisa was a very mysterious woman who appeared to have many secrets. Francesco wanted the portrait to be half- length; and decided that the background setting would be a landscape far off in the distance. The woman herself was hard to capture perfectly. She sat at an angle and had her hands crossed over each other and appeared very courteous and respectable. Recreating her personality and showing it on her facial expression was rather hard. I made her appear knowing with a small smile and like she was always watching you as her eyes would be following you whichever angle you looked at the painting. I ended up keeping the painting to myself for years instead of fulfilling what Francesco del Giocondo wanted and never fully finished it. I never imagined that in hundreds of years after I started the Mona Lisa that it would become one of the most famous paintings in the world. |
Emma Grogan 10CTRS3Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer
I sit in front of a dark background, your eyes are drawn to me and me alone. So closely to each other you can see the detail of the shadows on my face, we feel intimate. I wear baggy clothing with exotic blues and yellows and a single pearl in my ear is the only jewellery I wear, a motif that can be seen in many of my painter's other pieces. My painter, Johannes Vermeer, normally paints his subjects focused on daily routines and chores, however I stare directly forward over my shoulder. My lips open and eyes staring emphasise the importance of my facial expression. I, however, am not important. I, as a person, am not the subject of this painting. The subject is the clothing and material I wear, the expression on my face and the light that floods parts of my face and clothing and keeps other parts hidden in shadow. That is the beauty that my painter has captured. |

I am a man who owns a loyal companion. He is by my side for better and for worse. As I lay here lifeless he stays by my side to provide me with comfort. His eyes get sadder as my skin gets paler. I lay here in my armour to show my strength and commitment to what I had achieved. The armour provides a sense of protection through life and afterlife. As I lay here I know my loyal companion is there to protect me from any harm. My companion gets older as he waits for me to wake, his coat gets lighter and his face gets saggier. He is no longer able to sit with pride, as he leans on my resting place. As time passes everything becomes less alive; my skin becomes ice-cold, the leaves become shrivelled and brown, my tapestry starts to lose its vibrant light blue and my companion becomes much older. I am proud to say the only one who was there for me was a loving, loyal dog, who stuck by me forever. |
Elissa Guzzardi 10BRNS3Olympia by Édouard Manet
She reclines, more or less. Try that posture, it’s hardly laziness. Her right arm sharp angles. With her left, she conceals her cover. Shoes but not stockings, how unfortunate. The flower behind her ear is naturally not real, of a piece with the sofa’s drapery. The windows (if any) are shut. This is an indoor sin. Above the head of the maid is an invisible voice balloon But. Consider the body, Un fragile, resistant Consider also the black ribbon around the neck. What’s under it? A fine red thread line, where the head was taken off and glued back on. The body’s on offer, but the neck’s as far as it goes. Put clothes on her and you’d have a schoolteacher. |
Liana Borrello 10DLYS2Venus of Urbino by Titian
Surrounded by prosperity and filled with beauty My seductive eyes compel men so I can be admired For being the object of pleasure is my duty But only to be looked at, not to be acquired With one other, lies my loyalty For he is my Duke who has established my royalty. |
Caitlin Horton-Crundall 10CTRS2Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by John Singer Sargent
My name is Gertrude Vernon, known as Lady Agnew of Lochnaw. My direct gaze through my dark, alluring eyes is striking, daring you to stare back. The flowing fabric and lilac sash I adorning my dress emphasises my ladylike qualities. My casual pose may seem improper, but I carry myself with a certain confidence which you simply can’t resist. My grand, floral chair displays my wealth, due to my husband Andrew Noel Agnew, being a barrister who inherited the baronetcy and estates of Lochnaw in Galloway. My glowing skin catches your attention and my ethereal beauty draws you in, but don’t get too close. You are free to admire me from afar where I will remain reclined in my chair. |
Kiara Versace 10CNMS2This first step I used a piece of wood for the walls and base. I cut each piece to make them add up. I then nailed all the sides and base together. After I had finished the base and sides I began the roof. I used a plank of wood for the roof. I began by cutting the pieces small to make a base for the roof planks. Then I nailed all the pieces together.
